Cats blank Raiders on Super Bowl Saturday
The Saddleback baseball team finished off Super Bowl week with a 13-0 shutout win over Moorpark College on Saturday at the Saddleback Baseball Complex. Jace Barajas held the Raiders in check while the offense was busy piling up the hits.
Saddleback scored three times in the bottom half of the opening inning in sending an early message. The Bobcats had three hits in the inning, including doubles from Jack Borges and Jacob Hudson.
Saddleback blew the game wide open in the bottom half of the fourth inning when it scored six times for a 9-0 lead. The Cats sent 10 to the plate in the inning, rapping out four hits while taking advantage of some pitching wildness. Matthew Henning led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and then Andreas Nilsen drew a walk to put two runners on base. Both would come around to score on a double to right-center field from Austin Palmares to up the lead to 5-0. Joey Doskocil followed with a single to drive home Palmares and then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Jack Borges followed with a double to score Doskocil before advancing to third base on a second passed ball. Wesley Hickey was then hit by a pitch before stealing second base. Carter Enoch made the Raiders pay for the pitching miscues with a single up the middle for a 9-0 lead.
Despite all the offense, the day belonged to starting pitcher Jace Barajas. The sophomore from Torrey Pines High School was in complete control, pitching 7.2 innings before being pulled after having thrown 89 pitches. Barajas allowed only two hits while striking out four in improving to 2-1 on the season. Micah Bujacich pitched the final 1.1 innings in mop-up duty, keeping the Raiders off the scoreboard.
Saddleback is now 6-2 overall following the win. Saddleback will travel to Cuesta College next week on the Cougars in a three-game set. The two clubs will open in San Luis Obispo on Thursday at 2:00 PM.
