The Saddleback football program received more great news over the holiday break when it was announced that head coach Mark McElroy had received the highest honor among his peers. McElroy was named the national coach-of-the-year by the American Community College Football Coaches Association (ACCFCA) and will receive an award later this month.
McElroy recently completed his 17th season as the head coach at Saddleback, guiding his Gauchos to the state championship game last month. Saddleback finished 10-3 in 2015, winning the Southern California Football Association title and the Southern League championship. The team started 0-2 but ripped off 10 straight wins in what was a magical turnaround after a tough start to the season.
"I am completely honored and humbled by this Coach of the Year Award and accept it on behalf of my coaching staff and the Gauchos of 2015, for without their focused purpose, passion and perseverance, I would not have been chosen for this award," McElroy said.
McElroy will be presented with the award at the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year Dinner on Tuesday, January 12, at the 2016 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
McElroy is 130-68 in 17 seasons as the head coach at Saddleback, advancing to the post-season in 14 of the past 15 seasons. He has guided the Gauchos to conference titles on four occasions, winning the Southern League title in two of the past four years.
