Cats record sixth shutout
OEC play starts on Thursday
The Saddleback women's flag football team improved to 13-0 for the season after shutting out El Camino College, 21-0, on Tuesday in Torrance. It was the sixth shutout of the season and the fifth in the past eight games.
Saddleback finished up its pre-conference schedule with a win against an athletic El Camino College team. The Bobcats methodically wore down the Warriors and eventually widened the lead in the second half of the game.
Saddleback was sluggish on offense to start but finally hit paydirt when Brooklee Harris found Breanna Sandmark on a 55-yard pass play in the final minute of the first half. The extra point was good as Harris connected with Talita Robinson for a 7-0 lead.
Saddleback opened up a two-score lead midway through the third quarter when the defense left its mark. This time it was Ashley Sandmark taking an interception and returning it 40 yards for a touchdown. The Cats went for two and the pass to Breanna Sandmark was successful on the two-point try.
Saddleback put the final nail in the coffin in the early part of the fourth quarter when Kirra Clavijo found Breanna Sandmark for a 30-yard score. The Bobcats missed the extra point but still had a comfortable 21-0 cushion with time running out on the Warriors.
Saddleback is now 13-0 to start the season. The Bobcats will start Orange Empire Conference play on Thursday when they take on Golden West College at 3:00 PM at Irvine Valley College.
NOTE: The Orange Empire Conference found out this week that it had all four teams ranked in the top 10 in the newly created "Filthy 20" national community college flag football rankings put out by JCGridiron.com. Saddleback came in at No. 4, Irvine Valley No. 5, Cypress No. 8 and Golden West No. 10.
