Season starts with a Moon shot
Saddleback wins opener against Cerritos
The Saddleback softball team opened the 2026 campaign with a 6-4 victory over Cerritos College on Friday inside Bobcats Field. Averi Moon's three-run homer in the second inning was the catalyst.
Saddleback got off to a great start when Moon pulled a ball over the left field wall for the first home run of the season. The three-run shot came on the heels of Lehua Garcia singling to start the inning and Colette Howren reaching base on a defensive error.
The Bobcats increased the lead to 6-1 in the bottom half of the fourth inning when scoring twice. Saddleback had a leadoff double from Howren, who later came around to score on a wild pitch. Moon would then score her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Jenna Juarez for the 6-1 advantage.
Cerritos made a charge, as they took advantage of a defensive error in the fifth inning to score three runs in pulling within 6-4. Saddleback then buckled down on defense and starting pitcher Kylee Cammarato got hot, striking out six batters over the final three innings. Cammarato would finish with 10 strikeouts for the game in going to 1-0 on the season.
Saddleback will try to improve on the quick start on Saturday when it hosts Santa Barbara City College in a double-header at Bobcats Field. The Bobcats and Vaqueros are scheduled to start at 12:00 PM on Saturday.
