The Saddleback softball team split a double-header with Chaffey College on Wednesday afternoon at Bobcats Field. The Bobcats have three more non-conference games before heading into Orange Empire Conference play.
Wednesday was supposed to be the first half of a home-and-home series with Chaffey, with game two being played at Chaffey later in the week. With wet conditions at the field in Rancho Cucamonga, the two teams opted to make it double-header on Wednesday at Saddleback.
Saddleback took the opening game, 6-2, with a late surge of runs. The Bobcats and Panthers were tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning when Saddleback took its first lead of the game with the help of some wildness from the Chaffey pitcher. Millie Maher was hit by a pitch and later in the inning advanced to third base on a wild pitch. She came around to score when Ehva Cifuentes-Zombulovic hit a sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-1 lead.
Saddleback blew the game open in the bottom half of the sixth inning when it scored four times to put the game out of reach. The big hit was a bases-clearing double to center field by Ka'ui Garcia to score three runs.
Kylee Cammarato pitched the first six innings in improving to 6-2 on the season. She struck out four while allowing seven hits before giving way to Colette Howren in the seventh inning.
Game two had a different feeling. With temperatures dropping into the low 50's, the bats joined the temperatures and went ice cold. Saddleback had just one hit in the game in dropping the second game, 1-0. Chaffey scored a two-out run in the top half of the second inning and made it stick as the Bobcats bats couldn't figure out Chaffey starting pitcher Mia Britt.
Howren pitched all seven innings for Saddleback and was very solid throughout. Howren (2-2) allowed only three hits through seven innings in taking the loss.
Saddleback is now 10-6 overall following the split in the double-header. The Bobcats are scheduled to play at Mt. San Jacinto College next Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM in San Jacinto.
