Cats off to 2-0 start
The Saddleback women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 64-51 win over Chaffey College on Thursday night inside the gymnasium. It is the first time the women’s basketball program has started 2-0 since 2011.

The Saddleback women's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 64-51 win over Chaffey College on Thursday night inside the gymnasium. It is the first time the women's basketball program has started 2-0 since 2011.
Saddleback got off to a slow start on offense, shooting just 28% in the opening quarter and trailing 13-12 on the scoreboard. The defense kept it close by forcing seven turnovers in the opening quarter while Kassidy Beach scored nine points to lead the way.
Saddleback's defense kept up the pressure through the second quarter, holding Chaffey to 27% shooting in the quarter while forcing another eight turnovers. The Bobcats eventually lead 26-22 at the half.
Saddleback took control in the third quarter as the offense started to show signs of life. Makayla Rutledge buried her third three-pointer of the game at the 1:09 mark of the quarter as the Saddleback lead swelled to 46-32. The Bobcat defense was again stellar, forcing Chaffey into 11 turnovers in the quarter.
Chaffey made a push in the fourth quarter to get back into the game. The Bobcats went 3:41 without scoring while Chaffey went on a 10-0 run to cut the Saddleback lead to 49-42. They eventually whittled the lead down to six points with under six minutes remaining before the Bobcats responded. Saddleback's defense again was the catalyst, holding Chaffey scoreless for 2:22 while the Bobcats built the lead back to 10. Saddleback put the game out of reach when Nina Saiki drilled a three-pointer with two minutes remaining for a 61-48 lead.
Saddleback finished with three players in double-figures. Rutledge led the scoring with 17 points on 3-of-7 shooting from long range and making all four of her free throws. Beach finished with 15 points while Saiki had 12. Saddleback's defense forced Chaffey into 26 turnovers for the game.
Saddleback is now 2-0 to start the season following the win. The Bobcats will travel to MiraCosta College on Saturday to take on the Spartans. Saddleback and MiraCosta are scheduled to start at 2:00 PM in Oceanside.
